An anonymous donor has stepped up to double donations up to $2,500 in March! We are far behind on our fundraising for the bike giveaway program this year.
The funds raised through this match month are to help us purchase some bike locks for people ages 12+. A bike lock costs us $25. It is an essential accessory to help prevent bike theft. Bike lights are required by law so they are also an essential accessory but we were unable to fundraise to cover the cost of lights this year.
We are fully aware that we are a needy bunch. It’s because we are so dedicated to seeing that everyone in Dane County and beyond has access to low-cost transportation and, that costs money. Although bikes are donated to us, every single one of them needs to be fully tuned up by a professional to ensure it’s safety.
Many of the bikes we receive are in rough shape and to restore them and prevent them from going into the landfill or being recycled, we have to purchase new parts and invest a lot of elbow grease into the work. In other words, while we receive the bikes for free, it’s not free for us to give them away.
As the only nonprofit in Dane County making bicycle transportation accessible on this scale in the State of Wisconsin, it is critical that we continue with our mission. Our work has many implications on the workforce, education with kids getting to school, people being able to get to the job center to search for opportunities for professional growth, jobs and more. It’s also imperative that we continue combat environmental deficit disorder in our children and work to combat climate change.
If you donate $25 today, that will total $50 for two bike locks thanks to the matching donor! Our bike recipients would greatly appreciate it (as do we)!
