Join us for the Big Breakdown on Saturday, April 25th!
It’s the largest hands-on recycling event in Dane County! Experience a circular economy in action at this hands-on event focusing on our sustainability efforts and lowering our operational costs through reuse.
One of the programs we provide as a service to the community is our Community Bike Disposal Service. It’s challenging to dispose of bikes in a responsible way—it requires us to pull of any non-metal parts which means we need specific tools to break apart bikes. This is one of the reasons we see many people placing bikes in dumpsters despite the Dane County Landfill not accepting bicycles.
This means we are left with a sizable boneyard each year, these are bikes that cannot be saved. We will pull them apart and use the parts to restock our parts bins, saving us money on purchasing new parts. We don’t talk a lot about our sustainability efforts although they are plentiful. Did you know that we don’t even have a dumpster at the largest bike center in the state? This is because we reuse and recycle the majority of our bicycle waste.
EVENT DETAILS
At this event, we’ll drag the boneyard into our volunteer space and we’ll be breaking down bikes to make space for our retail season and to fill our parts bins. Some of the work will include bringing the bikes out to the parking area so we can get them processed and broken down.
Thanks to our sponsors, we’ll be providing hearty refreshments!
It is recommended that you bring work gloves to protect your hands from metal. Youth over the age of 12 are welcome with a parent, caregiver, or adult.
30 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
*In order to guarantee space for you to work, we recommend arriving right at 10am.
